Ziauddin Sardar is a London-based scholar, award-winning writer, cultural critic and public intellectual who specialises in Muslim thought, the future of Islam, futures studies and science and cultural relations. Over the years Effusion has worked with Zia on a wide variety of projects so we were delighted when he approached us to design and build his personal website.
Zia has lived the life of a scholar-adventurer and has travelled extensively throughout the world. We wanted to present his life’s journey and the richness of his literary outputs in a visually dynamic way. With this in mind, the timeline became a central feature of the website.
Our challenge was to establish a look and feel fitting to Zia’s academic stature. We selected a navy and moss colour palette and adopted a classic approach to the layout and typography to create a sophisticated visual tone.
We built a fully mobile responsive site in Drupal. We implemented masonry on the timeline which allowed the design to dynamically reflow and optimise for desktop and mobile devices. We introduced some subtle animation and elegant transitions to enhanced the user experience.
